About unCommon Construction:
unCommon Construction is a youth development nonprofit that uses the build process to enhance learning and empower youth a real-world, hands-on learning environment. In uCC’s Apprenticeship program, a crew of 16 high school students from across the city of New Orleans builds a single-family home over the course of 12 Saturdays. Each weekend volunteer groups join Apprentices on site to build with them, and members of American Institute of Architecture (AIA), International Interior Design Association (IIDA), and Women in Architecture (WIA) are planning a mutual volunteer day to work onsite with uCC Program Apprentices this Fall!
Volunteer Day Information:
Volunteering with unCommon Construction is a full-day event in which apprentices, uCC staff, and volunteers work together to complete a full phase of construction on our build site. Volunteers need to arrive on-site at 8:15 am and work until 4:00 pm. We ask that volunteers remain on site for the entirety of the day’s events. This includes making plans to stay on site during lunch in order to use the informal time to build community with apprentices. Volunteers should wear closed-toed shoes and clothing that can get dirty. Please read our FAQs for more information about our volunteer days.
Each volunteer is required to complete an Information and Liability waiver before arriving at the worksite. Volunteers should download, print, and fill out by hand the .pdf file linked above and bring it to the work site the morning of the build day.
The video linked below will inform volunteers of the basic procedures and expectations of volunteering with unCommon Construction. (Every volunteer should watch this before build day!)
