AIA New Orleans Legacy Project

AIA New Orleans is a partner with The City of New Orleans’ Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, the Arts Council of New Orleans, and the citizen’s volunteer group Evacuteer.org to design and create 17 pick up points for the City Assisted Evacuation Plan Neighborhood Pick-Up Points Project.  The City Assisted Evacuation Plan [CAEP] system was tested during Hurricane Gustav, and efficiently moved 18,000 residents without transportation to safety during the mandatory evacuation.  During that experience, one of the key challenges found was the lack of clearly identified and advertised locations to serve as the exact neighborhood pick-up points. To address this issue the AIA New Orleans’ 2011 Convention Legacy Project and the Arts Council of New Orleans’ Percent For Art Program have teamed up to design and build a solution. With seventeen (17) pick-up points spread through-out the City, in every Council district, we believe this is a prime opportunity to enrich, educate, and serve the community through public design.

Help us make the project a reality by donating to the Legacy Project!  Please contact AIA New Orleans @

AIA New Orleans and the Rethinkers

Rethink Program Overview:

AIA New Orleans has been a proud supporter of the Rethinkers, Kids Rethink New Orleans Schools Architecture Program.  Many of our members have donated their time and knowledge in support of this program. In oeder for the Rethinkers to attend conventions, AIA New Orleans has also hosted many fundraisers for them.

The Rethinkers have regularly designed school facilities since 2007, thanks to the generosity of volunteer mentors like Lona Hankins, Steven Bingler, Bobbie Hill, Joel Ross and Brittney Everett. Two of their designs are included in the School Facilities Master Plan for the City of New Orleans: the Rethink 21st Century Green Bathroom and the Rethink 21st Century Green Cafeteria. In 2010, the Rethinkers entered the CEFPI (Council of Education Facility Planners International) middle school design competition for the first time. Their “school of the future” won first place in the regional competition and a national award of commendation.

By fostering strong relationships in our community and with the children of New Orleans schools, AIA New Orleans is helping prepare and teach our future achitects.

Rethink is the only non-profit in the US whose primary purpose is to engage middle school children in school reform.  Rethink is a youth-driven organization where students chose their own issues to “rethink” and present recommendations for school change at student-led news conference.  Visit our website by Clicking Here.

AIA New Orleans and ACE Mentors

AIA New Orleans regularly partners with ACE Mentors to promote their program to serve New Orleans schools.

ACE is a national organization that provides a unique partnership among industry professionals — architects, interior designers, landscape architects, mechanical, structural, electrical, environmental and civil engineers, construction managers, college and university representatives, and other professionals from related corporations and professional organizations — who work together to attract young people to their professions.

Industry professionals volunteer to become mentors to high school students in order to introduce them to the professions and encourage them to pursue studies and careers in these fields. In return, the industry gets a much-needed boost of new talent. More information about the mentor program is available online at http://acementor.org/510.

AIA New Orleans and Canstruction

AIA New Orleans supports the efforts of Second Harvest Food Bank for the annual Canstruction event - now in its 13th year.

Canstruction® is a Design/Build Competition that puts a visual spotlight on hunger while showcasing the local design community’s best and brightest. Food donations received from Canstruction® events will help Second Harvest Food Bank provide emergency food assistance to men, women, children and seniors in south Louisiana.

AIA New Orleans supports the event by assisting with developing architect teams, advertising the event, and celebrating the annual Canstruction entrants with a post-event exhibition, wine reception, and food drive. We collect cans and food during the reception which will in turn be given to Second Harvest Food Bank, and exhibit the boards and winners in our Center for Design for a month following the Canstruction event.

For more information on Canstruction events, please contact Natasha Robinson at 504.729.2821.
